What is protruding mouth surgery (ASO)?
What is a protruding mouth?
The medical term is bimaxillary dentoalveolar protrusion : the upper and lower teeth and gum bone sit forward, pushing the lips out — often with a chin that looks receded. Mild cases can improve with braces; moderate to severe skeletal protrusion needs surgery.
How does ASO work?
Under general anesthesia, four premolars are removed and the front segment of the upper and lower jaw — bone plus six teeth — is moved back in one step. All incisions are inside the mouth, so there are no visible scars.
ASO vs. two-jaw surgery
ASO moves only the front jaw segments; two-jaw surgery moves the entire upper and lower jaw. ASO is less invasive, recovers faster and does not require the jaws to be banded shut.

Who is a good candidate for ASO?
People with moderate to severe bimaxillary protrusion — lips that don't close naturally, a forward gum line or a protruding philtrum. Mild cases may be treated with orthodontics alone.
Will I be able to talk and eat after surgery?
Yes. ASO does not require rubber-band jaw fixation, so you can speak, drink and breathe normally right after surgery. A soft diet is recommended early on.

ASO(Anterior Segmental Osteotomy) surgery is performed for the patients with protruding mouth of moderate to severe grade.
ASO is a surgery that moves the maxillary and mandibular alveolar bone & six teeth complex backwards at once following extracting the (upper and lower) four premolar teeth, under general anesthesia. The surgery time of ASO is only about one hour or less.
